Veterinary Assistants and Animal Health Technologists provide technical support to veterinarians by caring for animals and assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health disorders.

Work: Animal Health Technologists perform some or all of the following duties: , Handle, restrain and care for animals undergoing treatment and surgery; Perform radiography and other laboratory tests to assist in diagnosis of animal health problems; Assist veterinarian during surgery by preparing surgical equipment and administering and monitoring anaesthetics; Prepare and administer medications and vaccines under direction of veterinarian; Administer treatments as prescribed by a veterinarian; Conduct specialized procedures such as animal identification, dehorning and hoof trimming; Counsel clients on animal health care; Conduct and assist in laboratory research.

Requirements: Completion of a two-year animal health technician or veterinary technician college program or a three-year veterinary technologist college program is required. , Registration with provincial animal health technologists' associations is available, but is only required for animal health technologists in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
